Perfect weather, wonderful company, great food, airplanes everywhere……the EAA240 Breakfast in York Trip could not have been better.

Clear, blue skies greeted EAA240 aviators as we departed New Garden Flying Field and other local airports for a coordinated 9.15am arrival to KTHV York Pennsylvania airport. Ramp space is tight at York, and members utilized the grass and hangar parking spaces for the NINE aircraft that made-up the EAA240 fleet for the morning.

The Kitty Hawk Restaurant on the airport had reserved a room for us, and we’d advised them that 22 members and family were expected.

In fact we the EAA240 party comprised 26, and extra tables were quickly put in place.

The restaurant offers an extensive menu, and tough choices had to be made!

Over breakfast there was much talk about aviation, aircraft, upcoming events and much more.

We gathered for our traditional group photo before departure.

The EAA240 fleet took to the taxiway and were soon homeward bound. A great trip, and great EAA240 Event.

Many thanks to Brian for his fabulous organization and communication for the trip!

EAA240 members flew and/or drove to Massey’s Annual Chili-Fest 2012 this weekend, as did hundreds of other aviators. This is a popular annual treat for local (and not-so-local) aviators and turnout was strong despite the threat of worsening weather.

The flight-line soon was packed with a very impressive collection of aircraft of many vintages, type and styles.

Many more photographs here

The food-line soon formed and chili of all flavors, styles, vintages (just like the visiting aircraft) was there for the tasting. Chili’s had been flew in from far-and-wide and were eagerly sampled.

Appetites satisfied it was time to catch-up with old friends, and to walk the growing flight-line. Another treat is to sit or stand alongside the grass landing strip to watch the landing and departing aircraft.

All done, the EAA240 members made their way safety home to N57.

Thanks to Jim and Don for another great grass-roots aviation event.

We learned with great sadness this week that Tony and his wife Pat were killed in an automobile accident on April 11 one mile from their home in Maryland near Delaware’s southern border, at dusk.

Tony was “character” in the good sense of the word. He was a combat pilot in Vietnam, a GA instructor and much more in terms of general aviation flying activities. He flew an Aeronca in military markings. He was a strong proponent of safety, giving tailwheel instruction through his ” Tailwheel Spoken Here” initiative.

We’ve had Tony present at our Chapter sessions over the years, and will miss him at the many aviation events that he frequented

Tony has Gone West, as has his wife Pat. Our thoughts are with the family.

Three aircraft carried nine (The Wright Nine) EAA240′rs southerly, to the First Flight Airport at Kill Devil Hills North Carolina. Great flight, with fine clear weather all the way, enjoying spectacular views of Norfolk Naval bases, Oceana air base and the lower Chesapeake Bay.

The 1hr 30 minute (Cirrus) flight ended with a fly down the beach and into KFFA First Flight Airport. The airport is part of the Kitty Hawk State Park, with the beautiful monument in clear view from the airport parking area.

Cirrus and The Monument

We tied down, and called for our two rental cars – Enterprise. What arrived were a car and a Silverado truck! Fun! We loaded-up and drove to the hotel, for check-in.

We decided to tour the local area, and went to Jockey’s Ridge State Park, to see the Hang-Gliding and huge sand dunes. The late afternoon weather was just beautiful.

At the beach-front hotel, Nags Head

Friday evening we enjoyed a Wright Nine dinner at the Colington Cafe, a fabulous restaurant at Nags Head, where the food was delicious and the company even better!

Sunrise – 6.30am – found a few of the Wright Nine on the beach, watching the sun appear from the ocean. We had the company of dolphins too.

Saturday was our full day at the Wright Brothers Museum and First Flight. As we entered the museum the State Rangers met us and, as aviators and EAA240 members, offered a special close-up view of the Flyer. The protective rope was removed and we were able to inspect – but not touch – the incredible machine.

After the Ranger’s excellent presentation and a tour of the museum we walked the 900 feet of the first, second, third and fourth flights of the two brothers. Very inspiring, to be at the actual location of those critical first steps for aviation.

We then walked to the top of the hill (sand dune) and visited the magnificent Wright Brothers Monument, and a replica of the Flyer located near its base.

Leaving the historic site we opted to tour the beach area and found the local Fishing Pier which, given the excellent weather, was thronging (and moving under the weight) of many locals looking to catch their supper!

After a very full day we dined together at The Lone Cedar, another fabulous meal and great company!

The Wright Nine departed KFFA the next morning, Sunday, taking advantage of yet another great day of weather, though the take-off was into a very blustery and gusting wind, down the runway (020) and which disappeared at 2,000 feet.

All planes returned to New Garden and Chapter 240 without incident, but with many, many giggles, wonderful times and a great aviation adventure completed.

So, we’ve visited the two main aviation history locations in the US – Dayton and now Kitty Hawk First Flight! And had a lot of fun doing it!

Is this a great Chapter, or what??!!
