Chapter 240 Does It Again! Pancake Breakfast, Air Show, Dueling Tongs…..

At last - a break in the weather. Sunday saw a cloudy start but the sun broke through mid-morning as lines for our ‘Increasingly Famous’ Pancake Breakfast were forming. A full ensemble of Chapter Members were on-hand to serve up what our breakfasters tell us is the best in the region. We had a steady demand but the team kept the whole event moving along, cooking, serving, cleaning tables, handing out kids toys, keeping the coffee and OJ topped-up….. and all the time enjoying the excellent company of fellow members, aviators, show performers, FAA officials (!!), drive-ins and walk-ins.                                 Amongst the members and in the few quieter moments we had cooking styles were compared (wrist-flicking and use of feet, body position etc). Preferred  kitchen utensils were actively discussed, optimum grill utilisation was a hot-topic (pun intended!). And at one point a duel broke out between two servers brandishing tongs. Ha! We were just closing down at noon, anxious to get to the Air Show when a bulk-order came in, with people were racing up the hill to our hangar, anxious not to miss out on their breakfasts. We rekindled the sausage griddles (thanks again Bob!) and served this last group, taking our count over 420 breakfasts served for the morning. Again , the membership assembled to help in the clear-up and to get the project airplanes back in the hangar, breakfast tables stored, pots, pans and grills cleaned and stored for next time. Team-work was evident everywhere and we got all this done in record time, ready for us all to join - the AIR SHOW! Meanwhile, down on the FBO ramp the Chapter Pedal Car Raffle team had been hard at work selling the last batch of tickets, and then arranged for the ticket drawing to take place. the Air Show announcers officiated the drawing, and a aviation enthusiast pulled from the crowd pulled the ticket of:                     Doug Ditter, of West Chester - congratulations!! Mr Ditter collected the pedal plane last evening, we understand it is a gift for a grandchild! Our thanks to everyone who contributed to the Pedal Plane Raffle, the proceeds of which go to maintaining funding for the Fred Kacena Annual $1,000 Flight Training Scholarship, awarded by the Chapter to a teen who has demonstrated character and interest in aviation. Again, a great day for the Chapter, a great day for aviation.  Read More →

Flight Training Scholarship 2009 Awarded

The Fred Kacena Flight Training Scholarship is a key aspect of EAA Chapter 240, our support for general aviation and the encouragement of young pilots and their training. Our benefactor, the late Fred Kacena, made it possible for young people of character, academic and social success and with a declared interest in aviation to undergo flight training with the support of the Chapter. In 2008, the first year of our Scholarship, we selected Rachel Macy to receive the $1,000 flight training grant and it has been our delight to see her develop successfully as a diligent, committed and dedicated trainee pilot. We wish her every success going forward and look forward to the date she attains her Private Pilots License. We had three candidates for our 2009 Scholarship, and I asked Frank Wooten to form a selection committee to review and interview the applicants. Larry Weberking and Nathan Hauser joined Frank in this difficult task. Our 2009 candidates were: Rachel Macy Kyle McCane Joseph Pitts After detailed review and interviews the Scholarship Committee selected Joseph Pitts to receive our 2009 $1,000 Flight Training Award. It was my pleasure this evening to call Joe and congratulate him, and to call Rachel and Kyle and make them aware of our decision. I encouraged both Rachel and Kyle to maintain contact with the Chapter, to visit with us, to fly with us and to extend their interests in aviation and in achieving their pilots license. Joe will join us at the Chapter Hangar Sunday during the Air Show, where we will introduce him to the Flight School staff. Please seek out Joe, Kyle and Rachel at the airport and the EAA Hangar, give them your encouragement. Hopefully all three will become pilots in due course. On behalf of the membership I do want to thank Frank, Nathan and Larry for their sterling work in the 2009 Scholarship selection. Much appreciated. This is EAA Chapter 240 at its best!
