Neither Rain nor………
With two Nor’easters (not just one!) bearing down on us shedding rain and cold temperatures our Pancake Breakfast and Young Eagles flights looked to be in jeopardy. We had been hoping to end our season on a high, with a warm, sunny Fall day, attracting fly-ins as well as our loyal locals enjoying our freshly cooked breakfasts, using up the last of our food supplies. When the first of us arrived at 6.30am it was dark, cold and raining heavily. Lights and heat were needed in the hangar, it was cold and damp. Yuk. As more of our members arrived we braced ourselves to get the main doors open, to out into the heavy rain, to get Glenn’s Lancair out, making way for the breakfast tables. With Glenn guarding his beautiful new prop and spinner the Lancair was pushed into the rain. Tables were brought in from the trailer, we positioned these around the two project airplanes in the hangar. Leaving these planes in place seemed to make sense, we anticipated a very low turnout, half the usual tables would likely suffice. The hangar was getting warmer. Our investment in propane gas overhead heaters was clearly working. Grills were fired up, pancake mixture prepared. Sausages were cooked, egg mixture readied. And we waited. But not for long. By 9.15 we had a steady stream of hungry breakfasters arriving, anxious for a hot meal on this cold, wet day. By 9.45 we had a crowd of very satisfied customers enjoying our fabulous food, drinks and ambience. And then we ran out of propane. Our main propane tanks had emptied, aided by faulty gauges. The grills and the hangar chilled as the team worked to solve the problem. Our supplier couldn’t deliver for two hours - too late. The EAA240 team into action, working on contingencies and before long we had grills being fed from cylinders, and just in time as many more hungry customers had just arrived. 240 teamwork saved the day once again! We served 107 breakfasts, collected accolades and appreciation from our satisfied customers and - most importantly - fun was had by all. Chapter 240 does it again! Thanks to all who prepared, cooked and served. Thanks to The Propane Crisis Team! Thanks to all those who cleaned-up and returned the hangar to ‘working condition’. Thanks to all who came for our breakfast….we’ll see you next year! Hot Breakfasts are popular this morning! Read More →
